Lot Essay
Shaded by a seven-headed serpent rising above his head to form a hood and coiled below him to provide support, Buddha Muchalinda sits protected by the weather. The present example exhibits a strong Khmer influence, as is common for sculptures of the mid-Lopburi period: the proportions of the body, and the treatment of the crown and hair all closely follow the contemporaneous Bayon style of Khmer sculpture.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
There are superficial cracks in the surface, particularly at the proper-left side of the coiled serpent base. There is a whitish accretion scattered across the surface of the bronze, particularly within the snake hood and the lower, back side of the serpent base. Green accretion appears in some of the recessed areas, particularly atop and beneath the buddha's body. There is light pitting to the surface throughout. There is a small loss to the backside of the snake hood, just behind the buddha's chest. The snake hood appears to have been broken off and reattached with adhesive. There is wear to the raised decoration throughout, as well as expected nicks, scratches and dents.
