Lot Essay
Green Tara is depicted in a provincial style with simplified ornaments and upright posture. The deeply patinated goddess of liberation is ungilded, cast in a dark metal alloy. Compare the crown style with niches for inlaid stones, distinctive facial expression, lithe limbs, and double-petaled base to a bronze figure of Manjushri dated to the seventeenth century, see U. von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, p. 493, fig. 140F.

Condition report

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
There is a loss to the figure's chignon. There are two casting repairs, likely contemporaneous to manufacture, at the backside of the lotus base, where the lotus petals end on either side. There is some organic black matter in the recessed areas, as well as on the back of the proper-left shoulder. There is a very small area of green verdigris at the proper-left side of Tara's neck. The base plate is intact, but has been pushed in to reveal bits of consecration material.
