Lot Essay

Padmasambhava, the ‘Lotus-born’, also known as Guru Rinpoche, or ‘Precious Guru’, appears atop a giant lotus emerging from a body of water at the center of this full composition. His two consorts, Mandarava and Yeshe Tsogyel, flank him and he is surrounded by vignettes depicting initiations, teachings, cave meditations, and miraculous visions. The many fields of rainbow light as well as the overall color palette are typical features of the regional style associated with Kham Province (Southeastern Tibet) referred to in Tibetan as Khamri. Take note of the similar colors used in the present composition and in that on the opposite page, from the same region.
