Lot Essay
Gao Fei is one of the most creative and prolific painters within a new generation of contemporary ink artists in China. His ink and color works display traditional brushwork techniques and imagery, yet are unmistakably contemporary in palette, composition, and subject matter. In the work presented here, Gao Fei evokes, or even parodies, traditional Chinese aesthetics and themes, depicting a Chinese mythological narrative with a dreamlike distortion. Characters in the painting are freed from human being’s innateness, indulgently flying with costume-like wings. The artist’s fantastical style is fully embodied in the painting’s vibrant hues and nuanced characterization, whilst associating with psychedelic meditation through the harmonized expression of the figures.
