Lot Essay

Born in Jiangsu Province in China in 1929, Walasse Ting achieved a prominent career in the international art world, attracting renown through his vibrant depictions of women, flowers, and animals. In 1958, Ting left Paris for New York, where the prevailing Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art styles were in their heyday. Though his work appears to assimilate the former’s gesturalism and the latter’s flamboyant color scheme, Ting forged a singular style that is instantly recognizable for its uniquely expressive line and fluorescent color.

Untitled (Lady at Table) displays two of the artist’s favorite subjects—women and flowers—in an expressive composition that elevates both genres of portraiture and still life. A garden of flowers blooms behind the seated figure, rendered in a brilliant array of small dabs of paint that are arranged together to scintillating effect. The artist also applied this palette to describe the woman’s eyes, cheeks, and the flowers in her hair, as if to draw an equation between the vibrant blooms and her natural beauty.
