Born in Jiangsu Province in China in 1929, Walasse Ting achieved a prominent career in the international art world, attracting renown through his vibrant depictions of women, flowers, and animals. In 1958, Ting left Paris for New York, where the prevailing Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art styles were in their heyday. Though his work appears to assimilate the former’s gesturalism and the latter’s flamboyant color scheme, Ting forged a singular style that is instantly recognizable for its uniquely expressive line and fluorescent color.

The two works in this lot foreground the artist’s ability to evoke landscape forms with an economy of color and line. Sky and water are described in expanses of the same, unadulterated blue, while trees and vegetation are differentiated only through slight variations in color and outline. These works serve as the simplest declaration of the artist’s ability to render fully articulated scenes using only the minimum amount of visual information.
