Lot Essay

Randy Solon’s paintings exude a strong sense of spiritualism through their monochromatic grey tones. While the artist’s early work focused primarily on Greek mythological characters, later he began creating compositions that featured wildlife. In this work, predators and prey are featured in the same monochromatic grey palate which serves to unify these beings whom would otherwise be in conflict into a much larger whole. Solon seems to imply there is no absolute predator but rather that this status is only dependent a creature’s comparative power. The artist uses depictions of animals as a mirror to reflect human relationships. In this way, Solon tries to evoke the power of faith in his viewers.
