SPECIALIST’S NOTES
Li Huasheng belongs to the first generation of artists raised and trained in the People’s Republic of China. His early works often depict wild landscapes, country cottages, fishermen and birds, full of life, wit and innovation. In the inscription, the artist notes that he did not have a real place in mind when he first painted this landscape, yet a friend thought the scenery appeared to be that of Sichuan. ‘The farther one ventures into the mountains,’ writes Li, ‘the more spectacular the views become. It is only thus that an artist can depict the most majestic of all landscapes.’
