Lot Essay
Chinese monks and literati use scholar's rocks to contemplate over in their studios. The most valued rocks are shaped by nature and they are appraised by features such as thinness, openness, perforations and wrinkling, as well as by their resemblance to mountains, caves, animals or mythical creatures. The rocks may have been artfully enhanced to emphasize their features, they should be interesting to look at from all angles and are usually erected on a carved wood stand.
