SPECIALISTS NOTES
Born in Yongkang, Zhejiang in 1937, Chen Jialing graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1963, having studied Chinese painting under Pan Tianshou and Lu Yanshao, specializing in landscape painting and calligraphy. Since the 1980s, Chen has explored ways to fuse ancient Chinese mural painting and European watercolor, adapting them to develop a distinctive style marked by his use of faded, light layers of ink and meticulous lines. An avid photographer, Chen experiments with ink and color to capture the beauty of nature and the richness of its colors. Derived from classical Chinese text, the phrase ‘By the Mountain, By the Water’ is used to describe how buildings are situated, and often auspiciously so.
