Lot Essay

As the son of two famous political poster painters, You Si grew up in post-Mao era Beijing. He studied at the Shanghai Theater Academy and the Anhui Province School of Art before moving to New York in the 1980’s. In his work, You reinvents the traditional methods of ink painting by using an eyedropper to apply vibrant color to paper. His works depict dense jungle dreamscapes that, unlike classical Chinese painting, leave no blank space for ambiguity. Instead, You invites ambiguity through the way in which his abstracted shapes shift from representing blooming tropical flowers, to sinewy human organs, to and amoebic forms in the matter of seconds. This exuberant and imaginative work beckons and envelopes the viewer in its own universe.
