Lot Essay

Born in Vietnam in 1968, Dinh Q Le immigrated to the United States at the age of 10, where he later studied photography and art media. His tapestries made of woven patterns of photographic strips represent this multiculturalism. The photographic aspect of his work reflect his American education, while the process of weaving photographic strips is inspired by the traditional Vietnamese practice of grass mat weaving.

Le finds his inspiration in the tragedy of the Vietnam War. This piece, a reproduction of one of the most violent and iconic images from the war. Made with a montage of typical American consumer goods, this colorful version of the photograph hints at the complexity of war memory, especially for someone with a Vietnamese-American heritage.
