Lot Essay

Japanese artist Mr. began his career as the protégé of artist Takashi Murakami at his company Kaikai Kiki Co Ltd. He joined the artists of Kaikai Kiki in their quest to create a unique Japanese art market heavily influenced by consumerism, painting larger than life scenes celebrating the fetishistic culture of the Lolita complex.

Ah, Akihabara is a mural sized satirical advertisement for the “Electric City” of Tokyo in which anime and manga has had a growing audience in since the 1980s. Figures dressed in traditional Japanese attire, as well as schoolgirls and maids, dominate the composition. The work marries high art and anime culture seamlessly, while achieving the unique superflat aesthetic of the Kaikai Kiki Co.
