Lot Essay
In her works, Zhang Hui focuses on the experiences of young women in the China’s capital. An interesting hybrid of images of Chinese cinema heroines from the 30s, representations of women during the Cultural Revolution and advertisements from contemporary fashion magazines, her portrayal of Beijing women illustrates their search for identity in a changing nation.
In this painting, Zhang’s signature baby-faced girl looks over Tiananmen square, a place of significance in both contemporary and ancient history. This work is thus a thought-provoking representation of young Chinese women’s complex social and political status.
