Lot Essay

Hundreds of celebrities attended the testimonial charity dinner honouring Gary Cooper, who died only a few months later in May 1961 at age 60. Along with speakers including Tony Curtis, Dean Martin, Jack Warner and Greer Garson, Audrey recited a good-humoured poem praising her old co-star, titled What is a Gary Cooper?
Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper became close while filming the 1957 Allied Artists production Love In The Afternoon. In An Elegant Spirit, Sean Hepburn Ferrer remembers My mother spoke often of Cooper with much affection and respect.
