Lot Essay

Maurice Chevalier as Claude Chavasse played Audrey Hepburn's [Ariane's] father in Love in the Afternoon. According to biographer Barry Paris, Chevalier ...won her heart with a telegram on the first day of shooting: "How proud I would be, and full of love I would be, if I really had a daughter like you. When Chevalier learned Audrey's mother was a fan, he signed this photograph with a playful dedication as a gift to the Baroness Ella Van Heemstra. The faded condition of the print indicates that it was framed and displayed for many years.
