Lot Essay

This elegant watch was a gift to Audrey Hepburn from husband Mel Ferrer, possibly around the time of their wedding on 24th September 1954 in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. Audrey did not wear wristwatches, as she did not like the sensation of cold or weight against her skin. Mel called Audrey by her middle name Kathleen, and Audrey herself often signed her letters to Mel from Kathleen. Swiss jeweller Gübelin was based in Lucerne, just below the exclusive mountaintop resort of Bürgenstock, which became the Ferrer’s much loved home for a decade after Audrey had retreated there to recover from a bout of exhaustion in July 1954.
