Lot Essay
Probably one of the Avenel landscapes painted at Patrick Ryan’s property, Glen Ogil, in 1975. Avenel, settled in the 1830s, is in the heart of Victoria in the Goulburn River Valley, and is one of the vast and open Australian landscapes which so enchanted Williams through the 1970s. The Avenel landscapes, painted between 1973 and 1975, came after his exhaustion from working on the Adelaide Murals and are an expression of his desire to paint outside again.
We are grateful to Lyn Williams for her assistance with this catalogue entry.
