Lot Essay

'I find that a desire to paint the landscape involves a wish to hear more of the stories that take place within the landscape. ... From being interested in these stories it is a simple enough step to find that it is possible to combine two desires: to paint and to tell stories. The history of Ned Kelly possesses many advantages from this point of view. ... In its own way it can perhaps be called one of our Australian myths. It is a story arising out of the bush and ending in the bush.' (Sidney Nolan in The Australian Artist I, 4 July 1948)
