Lot Essay

'On the Third Day the fish teemed in the sea, the serpent entwined with the turtles and the air was full of birds'. (Leonard French in the exhibition catalogue foreword to French, David Jones Gallery, 1965)
From the Seven Days sequence, conceived by French during his time spent on the Greek Island of Samos, the present work is a study for the Third Day, for which see S. Grishin, Leonard French, Sydney, 1995, pl.12. The complete series was first exhibited at the David Jones Gallery, Sydney in November 1995, by which time it had already been acquired by Ken Myers for the collection of the Australian National University, Canberra.
