'"I think the pictures of that period [the late 30s] and the early forties tended to be small and tight. They were tonalist works rather than colour works and the subject matter around Lane Cove, while I was free it, was nearly always close up. If there were any influences then they would have been Claude Breughel [sic] and that group who were building up their pictures formally and working in tone rather than colour itself."'
