From the accompanying NASA caption:
"Scientist-Astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt is photographed next to the deployed U.S. flag during lunar surface extravehicular activity at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. The highest part of the flag appears to point toward the Earth, which can be seen in the far distant background. This picture was taken by Astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, Apollo 17 commander. Schmitt is the mission's lunar module pilot."
