A fresh, tall copy of Kobergers fifth edition of St. Jerome's Vulgate text, the fourth with Menardus's notice on the books of the Bible. HC *3072; GW 4239; BMC II, 417; BSB B-435; CIBN B-392; Bod-inc. B-273; Goff B-564; ISTC ib00564000.

Royal folio (410 x 290mm). 468 leaves. Major initials in interlocking red or blue, many with Maiblumen decoration, other initials in red or blue, red paragraph marks and initial strokes (neat marginal tear in 2 leaves, marginal paper flaw in 19/9, faint stain in 22/7, a little dampstaining at extreme lower edge of final c. 10 quires). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, spine re-covered in 19th-century pigskin, paper index tabs, large fragment of a c. 1200 German missal on vellum with rubricated initials lifted and mounted on 19th-century endleaves, many deckle edges preserved (minor wear on sides, missing fore-edge clasps).

contemporary correction by the rubricator on fo. 359 – a few early annotations – F.G.H. Culmann, Hannover 1840 (inscription) – William Henry Dutton (1827-1903; sale Sotheby’s 8 Dec. 1903, £10.5s; signature, initialled bibliographical notes, bookplate).
