The Active Seismic Experiment on Apollo 16 (the imprints of which can be seen in photograph ii.) involved astronauts deplying a "thumper" device to detonate small charges along a long geophone line beneath the lunar surface. The objective of the experiment was to better understand the structure of the lunar crust, up to a kilometre deep. The detonation created a small obscuring cloud of moon dust, which the astronauts were concerned may damage their cameras and picture quality.
