Lot Essay

In photographs i. and ii., the giant Saturn V rocket lights up the night sky at the Kennedy Space Center shortly after midnight on December 7, 1972 - the only night launch of the program. An estimated 750,000 spectators were on hand.

“I really wasn’t sure the crazy thing was going to stay together. Even to read the gauge was almost a guess,” remembered astronaut Ronald Evans (Chaikin, Voices, p.20).
