Lot Essay

The missions to establish Skylab (i.) in the Earth's orbit in 1973 and 1974 were among the longest space flights in NASA's history. The pictured Skylab 3 mission lasted over 59 days. Skylab was America's first space station to launch, but it was not a long-term success. Skylab was abandoned after the Skylab 4 mission, and 6 years on from this photograph, on July 11, 1979, Skylab tumbled from orbit and crashed into the Indian ocean. Debris was reported to have struck areas of Western Australia, but no injuries or casualties were sustained as a result.
