First American edition of the author’s most famous novel, an uncommonly fresh and attractive copy. Crime and Punishmentwas ‘the first of the truly great novels of his mature period’ (Frank).There appears to be no established priority between this and the first English edition, published by Vizetelly & Co. in the same year.Frank, Dostoevsky: The Miraculous Years, 1865-1871, p.96.

Octavo (190 x 125mm). Frontispiece portrait of the author, 1p. advertisement at rear. Publisher’s russet cloth, stamped in maroon and gilt (faint rubbing to spine ends, light marks to lower board).
