Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) – Gerard Valck (1652-1726)
Novus Planiglobii Terrestris per utrumque polum conspectus. Amsterdam: [c.1695].
Highly unusual world map using twin hemisphere projections from the North and South Poles. This is possibly one of the last maps prepared by Blaeu during his lifetime; his erased imprint lies beneath that of Valck in the lower cartouche. Shirley suggests that Blaeu may have intended this map for the largely unrealised Spanish edition of the Atlas Major. Apart from his own imprint, Valck appears not to have made any alterations to the plate. Shirley, World 459.

Hand-coloured engraved double-hemisphere world map using polar projections, California shown as an island, title at top within banner against a backdrop of clouds, stars, sun, and moon, the bottom scenes showing Adam in the Garden of Eden abundant with fauna to lower-right, and Adam and Eve languishing in a post-explusion landscape devoid of animals save some whales to lower-left, verso blank, image 407 x 536mm (444 x 571mm sheet).
