Johannes Duns Scotus (1265-1308)
Quaestiones in primum librum Sententiarum Petri Lombardi, edited by Antonius Trombetta (1476-1517/18?). Venice: [Printer of Duns Scotus, 'Quaestiones'], for Antonius Bononiensis and Christophorus Bellapiera, 19 November 1472.
Second edition of a foundation text of medieval philosophy and theology, and one of only 7 editions (the only one securely dated) assigned to this early Venetian, eponymous press. It follows by just 2 weeks the first edition, printed by Vindelinus de Spira also at Venice, and represents a separate recension, edited by Antonius Trombetta, later Bishop of Urbino and author of a work on the doctrine of Duns Scotus. The Sentences of Peter Lombard were fundamental to scholastic theology and a principle text of the university curriculum; Duns Scotus’ text was based on his own university study, and the present copy, with its extensive annotations engaging deeply with the text, reflects its continued use and importance.
