Launching at precisely 9:32 EDT, Apollo 11 was crewed by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. Just over eight years since cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, Apollo 11 became the first mission to land on and return from the surface of the Moon. Local Florida officials estimated that as many as one million people watched the Apollo 11 launch in person - a figure dwarfed by the 650 million estimated to have watched the Moon landing on television four days later.
