Lot Essay

Astronaut Eugene Cernan, who had just taken “tourist” pictures of Schmitt, asked the Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) to return the favour and to borrow his CDR (Commander) Hasselblad camera so that the picture would be in colour (Schmitt had black and white film on his LMP camera).

The result is one of the most beautiful “tourist” pictures of the Apollo missions.

Cernan’s gold-plated visor reflects the photographer, the Rover, and the South Massif. Cernan is standing between the US flag and the Rover whose high-gain antenna is pointed up at Earth. Wessex Cleft and the Sculptured Hills form the skyline in the background.
