The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION, IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural condition The canvas has been lined and this is ensuring a reasonably secure structural support, although there are slightly raised, but stable, stretcher-bar lines and an overall pattern of drying craquelure. There are also a number of areas where the canvas is rather uneven, with a circular pattern, which appears to be as a result of the adhesive used in the lining process. This could be improved by removing the lining canvas and relining. There are also some small areas of repair visible on the reverse of the lining canvas. Paint surface The paint surface has a reasonably even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows significant retouchings in the upper left quadrant, including retouchings corresponding to the repairs to the reverse of the canvas and other small scattered retouchings in the sky. There are further small retouchings within the architecture, the water, and other small, scattered retouchings. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in stable condition and the extent of retouchings applied in the past should certainly be noted, as should the pattern of craquelure within the paint surface.
