The mother in the picture is a portrait of Morgan's second wife Mary (née Reardon) whom he married on 19 July 1890. She appears in this hat in numerous other works including Me Too? and Dainty Fares, the latter exhibited at the Institute of Oil Painters in 1908, no. 181.

The canvas is unlined and on its original stretcher, which is providing good support. In the upper right corner there is a very minor loss to the pigment. Overall the pigments are strong and stable. There is some light surface dirt visible in the sky and in the lighter pigments. Overall, the painting is in good condition.
Examination under UV, shows some of the pigments fluoresce but this is in keeping with the artist's original pigments. There is a retouching to frame abrasions on the left corner side of the painting. Visible under UV there is also signs of an uneven varnish on the lower right corner.
