Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been lined and is on a new stretcher which is providing good support. The pigments are fresh and stable. There are some minor frame abrasions to the edges of the painting. There is a very minor speck of paint loss to the fur. There are also some areas of light craquelure to the upper left edge and the lower left edge, as well as to the sitter's dress and legs.
Examination under UV presents retouching to the frame abrasions, particularly to the upper edge and upper right corner, as well as the left edge. Scattered retouchings are visible to the sitter's face, torso and left arm. There is infilling to the aforementioned craquelure in the background, the most extensive infillings are to the sitter's skirt and legs. These areas may be consistent with the canvas having been rolled at some stage. However, the restoration has been very sensitively and competently executed and the picture needs no further attention.
