Lot Essay

Brockhurst met Kathleen Woodward in 1927, when she was modelling at the Royal Academy schools where he was a visiting professor. He renamed her Dorette, and she became his key muse, and later his second wife. In 1932 and 1933 he made a series of drawings, paintings and prints of her, aiming to form an ideal image of 'young womanhood for the modern age', and it seems likely that the present drawing is a study related to that project.
