UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Structural condition The canvas has been laid down onto board and is structurally sound and is ensuring an even and secure support. The overall structural condition would appear to be good.
Paint surface The paint surface has an even but discoloured varnish layer and would undoubtedly respond well to cleaning and revarnishing. Vertical lines of retouching are visible in natural light on the right of the composition, near to the right vertical framing edge. Ultraviolet light confirms these to be retouchings, together with thin vertical lines running up from the lower horizontal framing edge and a few small scattered retouchings in the sky and foreground. The vertical lines of retouching appear to cover losses which are presumably why the canvas was laid down onto a board. The retouchings could be removed during the cleaning process and replaced with more minimal inpainting.
Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in reasonably good and stable condition and should respond well to cleaning, restoration and revarnishing.
