The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION,
IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural condition
The canvas has been lined and this is ensuring a taut and sound structural support and has successfully secured the overall pattern of fine lines of drying craquelure. The craquelure is entirely stable but should be noted. The craquelure would have resulted from the natural drying processes of the artist's materials.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows extensive retouchings applied to reduce the visual effect of the lines of craquelure. These retouchings are most concentrated within the darker pigments of the sitter's costume and background. The retouchings have successfully reduced the visual effect of the craquelure.
Summary
The painting is therefore in stable condition and no further work is required. The extent of retouchings applied in the past to cover the craquelure should be noted.
