Lot Essay

The present watercolour was exhibited with the accompanying lines 'And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting over against the Sepulchre'...' We trusted it had been He which should have redeemed Israel'.

This extract is from Matthew Ch.27 V.61 after Christ's body has come down from the cross and has been laid out in the tomb. Here we see the two Mary's standing before the stone that was rolled across the door of the sepulchre. Goodwin had deep religious beliefs. When his memoirs were privately published, two years after his death in 1934, they were a scattered collection of papers mostly concerned with his religious convictions, much of which was discarded in the published version.
