Lot Essay

Although little is know of the life of Antonio Frilli, he is first recorded as an exhibitor at the Espozione Nazionale di Roma in 1883, as well as in Glasgow in 1888 and Paris in 1889. He was one of a circle of renowned nineteenth-century Florentine sculptors that comprised Cesare Lapini (1848-1893), Guglielmo Pugi (1850–1915), and Ferdinando Vichi (1875–1945), and left behind the behind the legacy of his prolific gallery, which produced a variety of commercial sculptures in marble, alabaster and bronze after the Antique as well as original compositions.
