Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CONDITION REPORT WAS PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR, AN INDEPENDENT PAINTINGS CONSERVATOR UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE Structural condition The artist's canvas has been lined onto a secondary canvas support with a new keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring a sound support and no further structural intervention is required. Paint surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer, with slight frame rubbing around the outer edges. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows quite extensive retouchings, particularly in the sky where glazes appear to have been rather excessively applied. These thinly applied retouchings could be removed, if required, and I am sure many would be found to be unnecessary. There is also an area of slight abrasion, with tiny flecks of loss, in the dark shadows just above the signature, which has partially been strengthened in the letters C,K, and the numbers 4,7. Ultraviolet light also shows retouchings in the trees and the darker shadows in the lower left quadrant and a number of lines infilling craquelure in the darker undergrowth above, and to the right of, the horse and and cart. There are other scattered retouchings and there may be further retouchings that I could not identify under ultraviolet light. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in reasonably good and stable condition and would benefit from revarnishing to address the small areas of uneven varnish. The extent of retouchings applied in the past should be noted.
