BENJAMIN WILLIAMS LEADER, R.A. (BRITISH, 1831-1923)
Cornish Cliffs, Newquay was painted in the same year as Leader's first Academy exhibit of a Cornish view, The Incoming Tide on the Cornish Coast. The formation of the rocks revealed at low tide on the beach appears to be the same for both pictures and it is possible that the present work was a plein air study for the larger oil.

The board is stable and is providing good support. There are a few scuffs to the picture surface, visible in the sky. There is some surface dirt, particularly in the lower third of the picture, and the picture would benefit from a light clean. There is a small area of cracking present in the upper left corner and a few minor frame abrasions along the upper edge.
Under UV examination there are some possible minor retouchings in the rocks and sky.
