CHARLES WILLIAM WYLLIE, R.O.I. (BRITISH, 1859-1923)
Charles William Wyllie came from an artistic background and his older brother, William Lionel Wyllie, was a celebrated marine artist. Wyllie received his training at Leigh's School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools, first exhibiting at the RA in 1872. Whilst William focused exclusively on maritime subjects and etchings, Charles’ œuvre is more diverse and he painted various narrative, landscape and coastal scenes. The present work is an example of his foray into classical subjects, handled with his characteristic light and loose brush strokes.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been laid loosely by the artist onto another canvas and is on its original stretcher. There is some surface cracking, most noticeable to the piping figure, and some old areas of stretcher stressing. Under UV light it appears that the painting has been cleaned and some of the artist's original pigments now fluoresce in areas where the old dirty varnish has been removed. There are one or two minor spots of retouching. Otherwise the picture is essentially in good condition.
