CORNELIS VREEDENBURGH (DUTCH, 1880-1946)
The Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk on the Dam, Amsterdam
Vreedenburgh was mostly an autodidact, although he had been introduced to the trade of painting at an early stage in his life since his father had a decorating studio in Woerden. Vreedenburgh added city views of Amsterdam as a subject matter in 1917, coinciding with his return from abroad and his move to Laren. The present lot is a good example of a city scene, executed ten years later, in 1927. The Royal Palace of the Dam is depicted in all its architectural glory as the centre of the nation's capital, with city life shown around its statuesque flanks. Vreedenburgh's appreciation of a colourful palette is well illustrated in this work with details in the background set out in red and yellow, and with the fresh green of a small park, which is no longer present, to the foreground.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Oil on canvas. The canvas has not been lined. The paint layer is secure and in good condition, with the texture of the brushwork beautifully preserved. The canvas is slightly slack on the stretcher. The varnish is yellowed and very minor surface dirt is visible. In natural light no obvious damages or retouching can be detected, except for a very minor frame abrasion visible in the lower left corner. The original impasto and pigments appear to be beautifully preserved. Overall, the painting appears to be in excellent and authentic condition. Examination under UV light shows no apparent retouchings or damages. Under UV light the varnish flouresces green, making a more detailed reading difficult.
