The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION,
IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
Structural Condition
The canvas has been lined onto a new keyed wooden stretcher and this is ensuring a sound
and secure structural support and no further structural intervention is required.
Paint Surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are some small scattered drying cracks
which are entirely stable and some of which show the underlying red ground layers, particularly
those within the wall of the quay behind the seated figures.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows quite extensive apparent retouchings, the most
notable of which are within the jersey of the man seated in the foreground, small retouchings
on the woman seated on the upper right of the composition and extensive apparent
retouchings along the left side of the paint surface, including retouching in the water and in
the lower left corner. These retouchings all appear to be larger than is really necessary and
could undoubtedly be reduced if removed during the cleaning process and replaced with
more minimal inpainting where required.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in stable condition and the extent of apparent
retouchings applied in the past should be noted.
