This is a second very slightly smaller version after the work in the Hamburger Kunsthalle (circa 1916, Inv. no 1972/11 13273 - D.C/O.-Z. no 570, 53 x 40 cm). The composition of the present lot is closely related to Khnopff's work on paper En prière (circa 1916; D.C/O.-Z. 574), which similarly uses the motif of the model's praying hands covering her lips to emphasise the element of silence.
We are grateful to Mrs Gisèle Ollinger-Zinque for confirming the authenticity of the present lot.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CONDITION REPORT WAS PREPARED BY DEBORAH BATES, AN INDEPENDENT WORKS ON PAPER CONSERVATOR UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE Not examined in studio conditions. Condition: The primary support is a fine tissue paper lined onto a prepared board. It is planar and in very good overall condition albeit with slight acidity and a small area of mechanical damage in the lower right corner which contains a large and small surface fracture. There is a mount burn line at the outer edges adjacent to a line of silver accretion from a previously used decorative overmount. Acidity is moderate but the paper tone is quite even and pleasing with only one obtrusive fox mark I the lower right quarter. Despite the acidity of the secondary board, the whole is stable, environmentally dependent.
