GEORGE SPENCER WATSON, R.A., R.W.S., R.O.I. (BRITISH, 1869-1934)
Portrait of 2nd Lieutenant William Gilbert Houldsworth (1891-1914) of the 1st Batallion, Scots Guards
One of the first soldiers sent to the Western Front in August 1914, William Gilbert Houldsworth enlisted in the Scots Guards shortly after coming down from Oxford. Tragically he was amongst the earliest victims of the fighting, dying at the age of 23 on 23 September 1914 in France. His mother commissioned a posthumous portrait from Spencer Watson in 1924 in memory of her only son, with Houldsworth's cousin standing in as the model.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is unlined. It is slightly loose on the stretcher and might benefit from being restretched. There is a small tear to the left lapel (centre left) and some minor flaking to lower edge. There is some surface dirt and some old drips of water down the upper centre. There is some stretcher stressing in the centre of the canvas and some surface cracking. UV light reveals no significant signs of restoration, some of the pigments fluoresce around the sitter's face but these appear consistent with the artist's original pigments.
