The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Oil on canvas
The canvas has been relined.
The paint layer appears to be secure and stable.
The painted surface appears to have been cleaned in the past and has only minor varnish discolouration.
There are patterns of craquelure present throughout, predominantly in the sky.
Examination under UV light shows a spot of retouching circa 3 x 2 inches in the upper right quadrant, other scattered spots of sensitively handled cosmetic retouching to the aforementioned craquelures throughout the sky, a small spot of retouching (approx. 0.5 x 0.5 inches below the horses to the left hand side) and some strengthening to flag in the lower right quadrant. Other minor scattered spots of retouching and strengthening visible.
Overall the painting presents very well in a gilt decorative period style frame.
The colours in the catalogue are slightly too green and lack some of the nuances of the warmer tones in the painting.
