The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CONDITION REPORT WAS PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR, AN INDEPENDENT PAINTINGS CONSERVATOR UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural condition
The canvas is unlined and is evenly and securely attached to what is evidently the original
keyed wooden stretcher. The canvas has a canvas stamp on the reverse. The overall structural
condition is very good and it is obviously most encouraging to find the canvas in its original
unlined state.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even if discoloured varnish layer and while no work is required for
reasons of conservation, cleaning should be beneficial.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows just some tiny specks of possible retouching in the
upper left corner and perhaps on the upper horizontal turnover edge, and even these may just
be frame rubbing. Ultraviolet light also confirms how opaque and discoloured the varnish
layers have become and therefore the painting should respond well to cleaning.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in excellent and stable condition with the potential
for the overall appearance to be considerably improved by cleaning and revarnishing
