Lot Essay

Holiday's daughter Winifrid (1866-1949) became a violinist and violin teacher, alongside her work as a suffragette.
Alexandra Kitchin (1864-1912) was named after her god-mother Alexandra of Denmark (then Princess of Wales), and was also the subject of at least five photographs by Lewis Carroll aged between four and sixteen. Reverend Dr George William Kitchin (1827-1912) was the first Chancellor of the University of Durham and Dean of Winchester, and a friend of Carroll and John Ruskin, as well as Holiday.
