Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is lined. There is an area of paint flaking with associated losses to the left side of the upper edge. There are some light scuffs along the right hand edge. There is some surface dirt and the picture might benefit from a clean.
Under UV light there are some areas of retouching, mostly in the sky, and along the edges of the canvas. The most significant areas are in the upper left and right corners and to the sky around the top of the mast. There is a layer of uneven varnish that renders any further reading difficult. Some of the areas of restoration have discoloured and are visible to the naked eye.
